BCA has three main program areas: Advocacy, Education and Encouragement.
Advocacy
BCA advocates at any and every opportunity to make Anchorage a more bicycle-friendly city. Some of our advocacy efforts include:
- Advocating for a strong Anchorage Bike Plan
- Advocating for better bike laws in the Title 9 Municipal code rewrite
- Advocating for state-wide bike laws like the recently introduced HB 132.
- Advocating for smart growth that address all modes of transportation, either project-by-project, or at the transportation plan level.
- Advocating for Complete Streets
Education
BCA believes that education for both motorists and bicyclists is key to making Anchorage a safer place for everyone. To this end, BCA provides clinics on how to safely while following the rules of the road when riding in traffic; how to ride in the fall and through the winter.
Summer of 2010, BCA is piloting our first youth bicycle safety curriculum at Camp Fire USA. BCA is teaching 60 kids how to bicycle safely while commuting.
If you are interested in a clinic for your office, school or workplace, please contact us.
Encouragement
Sometimes we need a little extra something to get on the bike. BCA recognizes this and trys to provide incentives to get people on their bikes. Coffee & Treats, a monthly event held throughout the summer is one small effort we offer to encourage folks to bike to work and thank those who commute by bike. This summer, we are grateful to the strong support Raven’s Brew Coffee has shown us,

as well as Snow City Cafe

and Great Harvest Bread Co. for all the donated treats.

We also recognize that summer festivals are a great time to get the family on bikes, instead of packing everyone into a car on a beautiful weekend day. BCA provides free and secure bike parking at major events around town like, the Renewable Energy Alaska Project summer fair, the 4th of July picnic, Spenard Farmers Market, Bike First Fridays, and hopefully more events in 2010. If you have a big event scheduled for summer 2010 and think bike parking would be appreciated, let us know.
BCA is interested in providing our bicycle valet services to more and more funtions like the Heart Run and Alaska Run for Women. Please contact us if you are interested in our bicycle valet services for your event. It really cuts down on traffic mayhem at participating events.
