We’d like to send a big Thank You to everyone who came out for Winter Bike Fest 2011! Thanks to a number of hard working volunteers, we were able to bring you several events over the last two weeks that celebrate cycling!

We kicked off Winter Bike Fest 2011 with Bike First Friday and 35 of you came out to enjoy Bike Bingo, local art, and the company of other cyclists. Thanks to BCA board member and volunteer Dawn Groth for putting it all together!

Next was the first Winter City 50K Populaire, thanks to Alaska Randonneurs! Kevin Turinksy put together a great course touring some of Anchorage’s coolest eateries, and 80 of you braved the cold  temperatures and enjoyed a fun ride through town. Thanks to Cafe Amsterdam, The Cake Studio, Fire Island Rustic Bakehouse and City Market for sharing their space with us!

We finished up Winter Bike Fest 2011 Thursday night at Bears Tooth and showed two cool films, Cycling Copenhagen and Bicycle Dreams. I’m happy to report hundreds of you showed up and the show sold out! The producers of Bicycle Dreams have offered BCA supporters a special discount code for purchasing the DVD online, and the BCA gets a percentage of the sales! Go to the Bicycle Dreams website and click the “Buy Bicycle Dreams on DVD” button. Then in the discount code box enter “BCA” for the code for an instant 20% deduction.

Another cool thing that happened recently was the launch of a new Alaskan online bike forum to replace AK Spokes. Check out AlaskaBikeHub. Thanks to volunteer Jordan Blackson for providing Alaskan cyclists with a new online forum!

Spring is right around the corner and we’re already thinking about Bike To Work Day (May 20), Free Coffee And Treats For Commuters (the last Friday of every Summer month), Free And Secure Bike Parking (we always need volunteers for these), more Bike First Fridays, the BCA Veggie Roll, and launching our Smart Cycling Bike Education classes.

Hope to see you out there!

Winter Bike Film Fest – Feb. 17th, 8:00pm at the Bear Tooth

BCA’s Winter Bike Fest 2011 concludes this Thursday at the Bear Toothfor a bike film festival. We’re showing two films, Cycling Copenhagen and Bicycle Dreams. This is Anchorage’s first screening of Bicycle Dreams, an excellent film with a long list of awards. It offers an inside glimpse into the Race Across America, an incredible endurance race of 3000 miles in 7 days (for teams) or 12 days (for solo riders). Tickets are $7, and please keep in mind ticket sales do not benefit BCA, so we will also be taking donations at the event to support our work to make Anchorage more bicycle-friendly.

For those curious why we are showing a film on Copenhagen check out this simple video of bike traffic:

We’ve got a lot happening over the next few weeks. Here are the highlights…

Second Saturday Ride – Feb. 12th

Join us this Saturday, February 12 at 11AM at Goose Lake, for the next Second Saturday Ride. We’ll head down the lovely Chester Creek trail for a fun and casual winter time ride. Our destination is the Fire Island Rustic Bakehouse, where we’ll enjoy hot coffee and a host of delicious freshly baked goods. I’m not sure which is my favorite…those marvelous blueberry scones, or the decadent peanut butter sandwich cookies! The calories are all guilt free, since you’ll burn them off on the ride back. Anyone is welcome to join us, especially folks who are new to winter time riding.

Winter City 50K Ride – Feb. 13th

And don’t forget, the Fire Island Rustic Bakehouse is one of the stops on the Winter City 50K Populaire! The Alaska Randonneurs have planned a great course that weaves its way through Anchorage, from one great eatery to another! It all starts Sunday February 13, 8 AM at Cafe Amsterdam for registration, and the ride starts at 9 AM. This isn’t a race, it’s an excellent opportunity to tour the town by bike and sample the delicious wares at the likes of The Sugar Spoon, The Cake Studio, and City Market to name a few. This ride is a fund raiser for BCA. See our website for details!

Winter Bike Film Fest – Feb. 17th

The following Thursday, February 17 at 8 PM, our Winter Bike Fest ends at the Bear Tooth for a bike film festival.

The National Bike Summit in DC – March 8-10th

The National Bike Summit in Washington DC is March 8-10, 2011, and the BCA wants to be there in person to represent you! As you know, more Anchorage citizens than ever are riding their bikes, even in wintertime. Yet half of all trips are three miles or less, and more than 90 percent are made by car. The National Bike Summit has improved bicycle friendliness and livability in many communities, now we want Anchorage to have a representative at this National Summit, speaking up about our unique needs.

Attending the National Bike Summit provides representatives with the opportunity to learn from and share with other communities to find successful ways to make our own communities more bicycle-friendly and livable.

BCA needs your financial support to send a volunteer board member to Washington D.C. to speak up for YOUR needs. Can you send a contribution, or ask your company, to donate to help send an Anchorage representative?

You can send your donations to BCA, 2429 E. 20th Ave., Anchorage, AK 99508 (sorry our paypal is down until we get our 501c3 status)
